AI hype in 4 phases

Employees are starting to use AI for their work. Unasked, uncontrolled, uncontrolled. Not strategically, not “intentionally”. They do it anyway to get their work done in less time. More free time! Better work/life balance. Hopefully none of the bosses will notice…

Example: Thanks to AI, consultants, developers and project managers can do much more in much less time. Freelancers earn significantly more.

The bosses have noticed…. Companies that use AI to make existing processes more efficient and effective develop a competitive advantage over the competition. Of course! If I am 2/3 faster using AI, I can process more in the same amount of time than others.

Example: the consulting company has figured it out and now sells its employees three times as often, earns a lot of money, the employees now have just as much to do as before, only with AI support.

Damn. The competition has also caught on. Our advantage is gone, everyone is now 2/3 faster and so everyone is equally fast or equally good again. OK, some competitors from the past no longer exist, but some new ones have joined them. They all now use the same (or similar) AI-optimized processes. Just like when we switched from letters to email.

Example: all projects are now implemented faster thanks to AI. Developments / projects that used to cost 1 million now cost 1/4 million and are almost certainly completed on time and on budget thanks to AI.

If we want to continue to utilize our employees well, we can now either acquire 4x as many projects (if there are any). Of course, we could also lay off 3/4 of our employees. Or we can use AI to focus on the areas that cannot be easily AI-optimized. In everything that is digital today (e.g. administration, organization, status tracking, etc.), AI will be completely better than humans (sorry). But where personal interaction is involved, where intuition, genuine creativity, experience and gut feeling play a role, new potential will emerge.

Example: Life experience and social competence, genuine creativity instead of “numbers, data, facts”.

We are facing a fundamental change in the way we work. And we should not forget that:
